- Barcelona becomes a floating museum with the competition of the most relevant and elegant yachts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
- More than 800 sailors from 17 countries compete in 77 boats in the Puig Vela Clàssica.
Throughout history, hundreds of regattas have been held worldwide, but none of them—until the XVII Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona—had managed to bring together the most relevant categories of this long nautical tradition in one place: the 12 Metres, the P Class, and the 15 Metres.
The elite of the elite of classic yachts have come to Barcelona this special year with unique specimens that can only be enjoyed in this regatta. The legendary P Class emerged in 1903, and currently, only four of them sail: Chips, Corinthian, Joyant, and Olimpian. From the 15 Metres class, which emerged in 1909, only four boats remain, one of them out of service. The three that float, The Lady Anny, Mariska, and Tuiga, have also come together to compete in this Puig Vela Clàssica.
As for the mythical 12 Metres, visiting the Barcelona event for the second time after competing for their world title in 2014, they bring the nostalgic contrast of the legendary America’s Cup from the 60s to the 80s, when sails were changed, spinnakers were hoisted, everything was operated manually, and the match race duels, boat against boat, offered epic moments.
The departure of the classic fleet was delayed due to a significant and slow wind shift, from the nocturnal land breeze to the Southeast. Finally, the fleets of Classics, Gaff and Marconi Epoch, Big Boats, IOR Classics, and Modern Classics started their race on a coastal course with the first buoy located off Premiá de Mar.
