• From July 11th – 14th, the international elite of period crafts will sail to Barcelona to take part in the 5th edition of the Regatta Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona

The 5th edition of the Regatta Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona has been presented this afternoon at the Barcelona City Hall, in the presence of the Honorable Mayor of Barcelona Xavier Trias, the President of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB), Enrique Corominas; and Puig’s President, Marc Puig.

With just one week left for its celebration, the city is already prepared to receive one of the most famous and expected events of the season, which will gather the most relevant professionals from the nautical landscape. From July 11-14th, Barcelona will turn into a must-see for sea lovers all over.

After the success of the past four editions, the Puig Vela Clàssica has established itself as one of the most important sporting events in the Mediterranean classic sailing boats’ calendar while becoming one of the main attractives of the Catalan capital.

The Regatta as the main protagonist of the sporting and cultural agenda of the city

There are plenty of participating boats that have decided to repeat their experience in this edition, encouraged by the magnificient characteristics of the Mediterranean coast and by the high-level competition. Participation has been extremely successful, exceeding the numbers of previous years. Over fifty Spanish boats, along with others from countries such as France, England, Italy, Malta, Germany or the United States, will sail to Barcelona with the purpose of offering one of the most unique, exclusive and star-studded shows in the sailing landscape.

Some of the boats, such as the Malabar X, The Blue Peter or the Moonbeam III & IV will be present this year, aiming to defend -and even improve- their position against the most well-known national and European sailing boats.

Both Puig’s and RCNB’s Presidents foresee a big success for this sporting event, which mirrors the success achieved in previous editions: “For a long time, the world of classic sailing has had renowned events in special places such as Cannes or Cap d’Antibes. But now, thanks to the Regatta Puig Vela Clàssica, Barcelona has an equally high-level sporting event, a spectacle where modernity and tradition go hand in hand. It is a great honor for us to bring to the city and its citizens an event that has been specifically developed for sailboats. It is thanks to the effort of the insitutions, the crewmembers and the visitors that we’ve become a referent in the Mediterranean regatta space”, explains Marc Puig.

In turn, Enrique Corominas, President of the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona, says that “the organization of an event like this recquires a substantial amount of planification in order to make sure that the social and sporting aspects have the quality they deserve. During these days, the Club and the city of Barcelona are proud to show the entire world the treasure-like boats that participate in this edition”.

The 5th Regata Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona will be open to four categories depending on the model and the boats’ building year, and based on regulations of the International Committee of the Mediterranean (CIM):

  • Period boats: boats made of wood and metal, launched before December 31st, 1949.
  • Classic boats: built with wood or metal according to the original plans, and launched before the December 31st, 1975.
  • Spirit Tradition boats: those boas that can’t be judged by measuring regulations due to the fact they underwent alterations. This category also includes boats built in 1970 and after using modern techniques and materials yet ressembling the style of period or classic boats.
  • Big Boats: period and classic boats of 82 feet of length.
