The Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta has opened this morning at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona the photographic exhibition “With the power of the wind”, a photographic exhibition celebrating the ten years of this sporting event. This unique show offers the essence of the world class sailing to the capital of Barcelona through the best photographs of the boats that have participated in the competition since its inception in 2008.
The inauguration event of the exhibition was attended by Roger Marcet, director of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona; Félix Escalas, president of the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona (RCNB); Damián Ribas, vice-chancellor of the RCNB; Gabriel Arranz, director of Sporting Events of the Barcelona Sports Institute of the Barcelona City Council; Toni Reig, director of the Sports Catalan Council of the Catalan Government; and Jordi Puig, vice-president of RCNB. All of them have thanked both the Maritime Museum of Barcelona and the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona and the Puig family, their involvement to carry out this unique exhibition, which also serves as an anteroom for the 10th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta, that will take place between the 12th and the 15th of July.
Likewise, Jordi Puig has emphasized that “both this photographic exhibition and the imminent celebration of the 10th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta reaffirm the Puig family’s commitment to Barcelona and to sailing”.
The exhibition, which can be visited for free until the 16th of July, shows 30 large-format images taken by Nico Martínez, a photographer with international prestige who, from the beginning of the event, has been able to capture with his objective the best moments of the competition as well as boats that exceed one hundred years of history.
Also noteworthy are the images of Alfred Farré and Luis Fernández, winner and finalist of the international contest Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image in 2014 and in 2016, respectively. Awards recognized as the Oscars of nautical photography.
Big Boats as the fascinating Moonbeam IV, in which they Rainiero of Monaco and Grace Kelly spent their honeymoon; Historic vessels such as the Manitou, converted by the US president John F. Kennedy into his presidential boat; The Mariette, requisitioned during World War II for the surveillance of the west coast of the USA; Or classics of incomparable beauty such as the Alba, the Yanira, the Gipsy or the Malabar, are some of the boats that can be seen among the exposed images.
10 years of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta
Throughout its history, Puig has had a natural link with nautical sports in general and with sailing in particular. Shared by the whole family, the passion for this sports practice implies many of the values with which the company feels identified.
In 2008, Puig started a new challenge in the hands of the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona, by organizing the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta. An international event, specifically designed for classic and vintage boats, born of the desire offer the city the possibility to recover the spirit and tradition of classic sailing.
From its beginnings, the great acceptance among the professionals of the most classic art of navigation surpassed all the expectations. The regatta was consolidated in its second year and welcomed about 600 sailors from eleven countries sailing on half a hundred boats, doubling such way the participation of the previous year and thus securing the regatta both nationally and internationally.
In 2014, on the occasion of the100th anniversary of Puig, the company wanted to go one step further in its commitment to the world of sailing, adding to the Puig seventh edition, the World Championship of the 12m Class, the 12mR Class World Championship. A fleet with more than 100 years of history, which was the great protagonist of one of the most splendorous times of the America Cup. After this special edition, the regatta returned to its essence, confirming itself as the regatta of Vintage and Classic boats, with the greatest participation compared to other regattas disputed in Spanish waters, within the categories of Classic Boats, Cangreja Époque, Marconi Époque and Big Boats.
Today, the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta has been consolidated as one of the most prestigious regattas of classic boats in the Mediterranean, bringing together boats and professionals from all over the world.
